UTS:Education, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unit administers University wide elective subjects in Indigenous Australian Studies. The unit also run a compulsory subject in all education undergraduate courses; and an Aboriginal Studies major within the adult education degree.
Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives of the major in Aboriginal Studies/Language Literacy & Numeracy are to ensure that students:
- are introduced to the cultures and philosophies of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies
- develop their knowledge of the social and political history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander societies since European colonisation/invasion in 1788
- are better able to critically analyse the socio-political and educational issues and trends of Australian society from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.
- are skilled practitioners who have competence in teaching and training adults in Language Literacy & Numeracy, and have a deep understanding of learning and a commitment to the education of others.
Structure
All students must successfully complete eleven subjects (66cps) to complete the BEd Adult Education Major in Aboriginal Studies & Language Literacy and Numeracy Education. Aboriginal Studies subjects may also be taken as electives by students not wishing to complete the Major.
