WHAT'S THE COURSE ABOUT?
The Bachelor of Education in Adult Education (Aboriginal Studies/Language Literacy & Numeracy Major) is a three year full-time course for mature aged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who want to know more about planning and delivering adult education and training programs.
While all students enrol in a three year Bachelor program, a two year exit with the award of an Advanced Diploma in Adult Education is optional.
HOW DO I AFFORD IT?
If you can't afford to leave full-time employment and/or prefer not to leave your community to study - you don't have to.
Our course is offered in a residential block mode. Which means that for the three year length of the course, students attend classes for six weeks per year (three, one week residential blocks each semester). In addition to the teaching blocks, first year students attend an introduction or orientation week block, while third year students participate in a compulsory field trip.
Accommodation and travel expenses, including a meal allowance are funded by The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEST) to approved Abstudy students living outside the Sydney area.
WHO CAN APPLY?
To be considered for the course you must meet the following criteria:
- must be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- must be of mature age (20 years of age or over)
- must not have completed a Bachelors or higher degree
- must demonstrate literacy skills sufficient enough to successfully participate in the course
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The course has Commonwealth Supported Places (HECS HELP) fees.
For the purpose of attending blocks, all travel and accommodation expenses, as well as a daily meal allowance, are paid for by DEST to approved Abstudy students.
WHAT DO I STUDY?
Graduates from the course will complete two major fields of study. All students will major in Aboriginal Studies and Language, Literacy and Numeracy.
Over the three years, you'll gain knowledge and skills in such areas as:
- program planning and community development
- program planning
- adult teaching and learning skills
- submission and report writing
- public speaking
- Aboriginal studies - culture, philosophies, history and politics
- Language literacy & numeracy learning and teaching
BUT I HAVEN'T HAD MUCH OF AN EDUCATION / I HAVEN'T STUDIED FOR YEARS!
In recognition of the fact that many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have had little experience of formal study, students in the Bachelor of Education in Adult Education (Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Program) have access to the following support systems:
- Students have access to the UTS ESSLA unit for study skills support. Assistance from this Unit is on a voluntary basis and is available for individuals or small groups of students. It is designed specifically to improve students' skills in such areas as library use, computer literacy, reading academic texts and formal writing.
- While attending study blocks, students have additional access to the programs' own Counsellor. This position is held by a mature age Aboriginal member of staff who can assist you not only in regard to your studies, but can also provide help or direction in relation to administrative or matters of a more personal nature. During residential blocks the Counsellor is accommodated at the hotel with students and is available after hours.
