A Brief History

1983
The Institute of Technology and Adult Education (ITATE) initiated the development of a professional course for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators in 1983. The development of this program was coordinated by Griff Foley with support from the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group and took it’s first intake in 1984.

1986
an Aboriginal coordinator, Norma Ingram was appointed to the program. This was the first appointment of an Aboriginal person to a tenured position in a NSW University.

1990
The Institute of Technical and Adult Education (ITATE) amalgamated with the University of Technology and the program was then administered through the UTS, School of Adult and Language Education

1992
New program established - First Intake of the Bachelor of Education in Adult Education Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program, coordinator, John McIntyre

1993
Michael McDaniel became coordinator of the Associate Diploma program

1994
a University upgrading of courses saw the program become a Diploma in Adult Education; an Aboriginal Studies Major was introduced into the Faculty in consultation with Jumbunna.

1995
The School of Adult Education was consolidated with the School of Adult Vocational Education to become the School of Adult Education

1995 -1996
a further upgrade of university programs saw the Diploma become the Bachelor of Education in Adult Education. Course Coordinator, Jennifer Newman

1998
Bill Ardler became Program Director for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Programs within the Faculty of Education.
The Master of Arts in Indigenous Social Policy took its first intake, Course Coordinator, Sue Knights

1999
Sallie Saunders and Karen Vaughan took over as co-coordinators of the Master of Arts in Indigenous Social Policy
A Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education and Community Management course commenced in the Faculty of Business as a joint initiative with the Faculty of Education.

2000
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Programs in the Faculty of Education was awarded the UTS, Equity Social Justice and Human Rights Award for their work in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education

2002
The Faculty and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Programs moved to its new premises in Jones St. Michael McDaniel is the current Program Director; Joe Fraser coordinates the BEd. in Adult Education; and Karen Vaughan coordinates the MA Indigenous Social Policy.

2007
The Faculty restrucuture the BEd Adult Education major in Aboriginal Studies/Language Literacy & Numeracy. Lecturing staff include Leanne King, Wendy Jobson, Jennifer Newman and Karen Vaughan. Administration staff include Melanie Saunders and Bertie Watts. Dr Karen Vaughan completes her PhD.

2008
The Faculty restructure the MA Indigenous Social Policy course into the new Master of Education in Indigenous Studies degree.
