UTS:Education masters degrees are focused around key strengths in adult education, workplace learning, vocational education, e-Learning, teacher education, TESOL and applied linguistics. The degrees reflect our research focus of `Learning and Change` and include the core masters subjects: `Learning and Change` and `Research Perspectives` in most majors. The degree structures include course specific core subjects for depth of study and a range of electives to provide breadth of choice. There is also flexibility with the option to study either face-to-face or by distance (except MA e-Learning), and the availability of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). Most of these courses will be offered at the 2008 mid-year intake for fee paying places.
What the Students say?
Jeff Kinder, Mediator and Training Manager MEd Adult Education
The UTS study program was extremely flexible, valued individuals' experiences and actively included their experiences in class and in the assignments, which were appropriate to adults and their workplaces and recognised that people have differing learning styles and that they learn from each other. As a direct result of the tertiary educational experience, I've had two books published (in collaboration with lecturer Elyssebeth Leigh). A third book is on the way and I use much of what I've learnt in everyday business. The degrees have opened doors that I didn't even know were shut! I have progressed to become an accredited Mediator and Training Manager for the Australian Commercial Disputes Centre where I have sought for three years to advance the practice of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Australia to help people who are in dispute find resolution without going to Court.
Andrea Barret, L&D Senior Curriculum Designer MA e-Learning
As the senior curriculum designer in a Learning and Development unit, my work involves finding best practice learning strategies and designing ways to deliver vocational training and development for commercial businesses. This course has allowed me to experience the learner perspective through a range of contemporary research and practice approaches at the same time as we are developing our own theories and design approaches. It has given me an enormous amount of insight into both the potential and the challenges of learning in this medium - vital knowledge for me in designing and constructing e-learning strategies for individuals and organisations. The knowledge and experience I am continuously building is already proving valuable in helping companies and professionals to identify and develop best practices and strategies using e-learning as an important part of their business practice, communication strategy and human resource development.
Jennifer Parsons, Canada MEd Adult Education
The degree offers a relaxed learning environment with small classes. This gave me an opportunity to meet and share ideas with like-minded people. I now have a clearer picture of what I want to do with my skills and where I want to work. In the future, I will combine my marketing and communications background with a new found passion for community learning and development. If you get the opportunity to study overseas in Australia at UTS, take it. I think you will find it provides you with more than just a piece of paper for your wall.
Sally Walker, Language Teacher MA Applied Linguistics
I have enjoyed studying for this degree, and believe that it has been successful in providing a balance between practical and theoretical subjects. I have been working at an English language college in Sydney and am now one of the Senior Teachers at the college. The degree has helped me extend my knowledge of language acquisition and development, has furthered my ability to encourage language learning, and has also given me further insight into the varieties of English in the world today.
Rosaline Tiong MA TESOL
I work at the Universal English College, an intensive English language school for overseas students, located in Pitt Street Sydney. I coordinate TOEIC preparation classes, IELTS preparation classes, English Conversation class, and teach an IELTS and a General English class.
After having taught for 10 years, it is sometimes possible to feel stale and get into a repetitive cycle of just teaching. This course has been really mentally stimulating, challenging at times but always enjoyable. The course has made me reflect on my teaching methodology and made me more aware of how or why I choose to teach a lesson. For example, students often find the writing component of the IELTS course the most difficult. The final assignment for Language in Social Context helped me to be more focussed in teaching writing and giving feedback to help students improve their writing. It has also helped me in curriculum development.
Elisabeth McMurray, TAFE Teacher MEd Adult Education
I can’t say enough in praise of the lecturing staff. They were brilliant. Having experienced their teaching expertise, I wouldn’t go to another university. Perhaps it’s their attitude. They want you to do well.
Tomoko Takasaki, Japan MA TESOL
The course provides not only theoretical studies but also rich practical studies in educational context. It is essential for teachers to know not only the knowledge of teaching methods but also what is going on in the real classroom. This course successfully provides both important elements.
I would like to be an English as a Foreign Language teacher. I hope to one-day partner with my Mother who is teaching Japanese in Taiwan and together set up a private language school.
Vijia Chain, Community Health Educator MEd Adult Education
I work as a Community Health Educator at an Area Health Service, in Sydney's West. The UTS Masters in Education in Adult Education allowed me to gain knowledge beyond the clinical expertise area of speciality in Community Health and to be able to apply this knowledge when working with curriculum development and facilitation of the multidisciplinary teams in health facilities. Of significance, it has challenged me to look outside the square, especially when working on programs for disadvantaged communities, which is my area of practice. I went on the Study Tour to Thailand and have gained remarkable perspective and motivation. I believe that I can make a difference in how I facilitate training for health professionals when working with disadvantaged communities. I strongly recommend this course to other health workers. After 20 years in the service, I have more purpose and conviction, am more passionate than before...and it shows!
