Primary Education at UTS

The UTS Primary Education degrees aim to produce high quality `teacher ready` graduates by offering the most up to date theoretical knowledge combined with a professional experience program of practicum teaching every semester, every year. As well as a wide choice of electives, we provide the option of a double degree with the BA International Studies for an additional year of study. With teachers in demand in Australia and overseas, a degree in Primary Education allows you to work almost anywhere in the world. As well as teaching in primary schools, career opportunities also include health education and the education of children with special needs.

The course is delivered at the beautiful Kuring-gai campus (til at least end-2010) near Lane Cove National Park and Lindfield rail station. The campus also has free parking for students.

What the students like about Primary Education at UTS?

Students in all four years (end of 2007) of the BEd Primary Education degree were asked to rate the course and state what they liked about it. The students overall rating was 4.5 out of 5, in the good-excellent range, with 100% of responding students saying they would recommend the course. The following is a sample of their comments from each year:

1st year students:

Anna
I think the main strength of the course is that despite the fact we are only in first year, we have completed two practicums. My tutors are all really helpful and explain clearly what is taught.

Courtney
I like the music, movement & dance subject because its class involvement style, and also professional experience.

Una
I like the fact that we have already experienced prac in a classroom even though we are only in 1st year. The course is well organised and run.

Penny
It is a very practical course. Assignments are relevant and interesting. I love the fact that you go straight into a school and can begin practicums.

Melissa
So much fun! It all links together. I feel as if Im putting a jigsaw together as the subjects fit into it to eventually make up the picture.

Bianca
I really enjoy the professional experience we get, I believe it helps me to identify if I want to be a teacher. As well, my friend goes to another uni and her subjects don’t relate to education the way that this course does.

2nd year students:

Alicia
The strengths of the course and what made me choose UTS was the number of practicums. The course is very practical which makes it extremely useful. Our confidence grows throughout the years and Ive only completed 2nd year. By the time I finish my degree I will have a lot of practical experience.

Paul
The teachers are all excellent and inspiring

Jessie
Practical components in both semesters ever year focused on teaching practical skills, lesson planning and programming skills early on in the course in order to give plenty of opportunity to apply them.

Rachel
The well qualified tutors and lecturers are great – especially those who have been or still are practising teachers.

3rd year students:

Kim
The amount of practicum experience every semester is a huge benefit. Most subjects focus on `how to teach` and `what to teach` which is its strength.

Anna
The Education staff go out of their way to help and accommodate.

Ella
The behaviour management subjects are very helpful. In many subjects the assessment is a resource that will be useful once working as a classroom teacher. The experiences on prac - its great to get out into schools twice a year.

Jennifer
One of the great strengths of this course is its practicum. We are given many opportunities to see what it is really like to teach, and to put our theory into practise. Classes are generally engaging, the course is also very well structured to promote social engagement among students which creates a great support structure.

4th year Students:

Sarah
The practical side of the course is great. I like the way we are gradually eased into classroom environment and teaching. From speaking to people at other unis this primary ed course sounds the best out of all of them.

Emma
The subjects specifically relate to primary school teaching. The prac-based opportunities have prepared me gradually to feel confident and ready to start teaching.

Gina
Learning about the range of different digital media.

Sally
The strengths are the practicum throughout every semester and the structured nature of the course core subjects (while at the same time) the course allows for interest in topics through electives. And the opportunity to go overseas.
