2008 winner - The NSW Adult Literacy and Numeracy Award
This prize is awarded to the graduating student in the Bachelor of Education
in Adult Education who demonstrates of excellent academic achievements in
the course generally, and more specifically in subjects in the Language,
Literacy and Numeracy major.
1. What is your current occupation?
My current occupation is TAFE NSW Outreach Coordinator at Wetherill Park.
2. What student achievements helped you win the award?
The challenges to work through a broad spectrum of perspectives in the area
of Literacy and Numeracy in a thought provoking, supportive, motivating environment
with a cohort of students that brought their own disparate life experiences
and knowledge into an environment where frank and open dialogue was promoted.
3. How have you used the content of the BEd in your occupation?
Throughout my study I applied the content to my professional practices. This
include organising and running state-wide professional developments for TAFE
Outreach, working on new curriculum for TAFE NSW outreach and supporting
teachers in my role as an assistant Outreach Coordinator. The most exciting
use of content was in my Prac's where I worked with an outstanding teacher,
Paul Drury, in very challenging circumstances. He showed me how to weave
the theory into the practice seamlessly and effectively.
4. Where do you see your career and lifelong learning heading?
I hope to continue to work in TAFE NSW Outreach with a team of innovative community
educators. The current political climate makes that a very exciting prospect
with its emphasis on social inclusion and education. TAFE NSW Outreach has
30 years of experience in using education as an effective tool for long term
productive outcomes in social inclusion thus we are well positioned to lead
the way and extend our work.
