Faculty Restructure
Dear Education Students,
From July 1st, the Faculty you are enrolled in will
have a new name and be known as the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS).
The
Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences and Education, and the Institute
for International Studies are merging to create synergies in teaching and learning
and in research. It will have four main academic program areas: Communication,
Teacher Education, Adult Education and International Studies.
The change will
not affect your course, subjects, study patterns or location, and you will
continue to use the Student Centre you are currently using.
The Dean’s
Unit will be located on level 5 of Building 10 on the City Campus. An interim
FASS website will be online from July 1st. It will include the current websites
of the merging Faculties.
I hope you will have a pleasant and relaxing break
and look forward to welcoming you to the new Faculty in Spring semester.
Best
wishes,
Professor Theo van Leeuwen
Dean
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
NEW - Basic Maths Skills Course
To ensure that all students have a minimum level of competency in primary
school mathematics, all primary education students are required to sit a Basic
Skills Test. Students are required to achieve a minimum mark of 80% on this
test to pass Mathematics Teaching and Learning 1. Students getting between
70 and 80% may sit the test again. Those who get below 70% have to attend a
remedial course before they are allowed to sit the test again. Free remedial
courses are run for these students and for students who have gained between
70 and 80% on a second attempt of the test.
Note: students who have not achieved
the minimum mastery mark of 80% after three attempts at the test, are not
permitted to continue with the B.Ed. (Primary) degree course and need to consult
with the Course Director as to alternative pathways.
The remedial courses are
run by Judyth Hayne, Maths Study Centre at Kuring-gai Campus.
Enquiries and enrolments to Judyth.Hayne@uts.edu.au.

Attention- PRIMARY EDUCATION STUDENTS
If you do not have 2 units of Mathematics on your HSC certificate you must
complete the Maths Study Centre 2 Unit Mathematics course before the
end of your degree.
General Mathematics is satisfactory for the 2 unit requirement.
The Maths Study Centre will only run this free course if there are sufficient enrolments and it
is generally offered every 2 to 3 years.
We hope to run this course in the Spring semester in 2008.
