Challenges for experiential learning

Our conference theme - The Identity of Experience -
focuses on current and future challenges for experiential learning.
These challenges include
- the challenge of integration
- the challenge of difference
- the challenge of research investigation
- the challenge of application
Each of these is described in more detail in Conference Themes
These challenges face everyone involved in experiential learning from outdoors
education, to designers and users of simulations and online learning. The conference
will provide opportunities for the exchange of ideas, sharing of practices
and the creation of new frameworks for future developments in
this broad field of education. The conference will also provide opportunities
for experiencing learning in a variety of uniquely Australian contexts.
ICEL 2008 Conference and Exhibition builds on the success of previous
ICEL conferences. It will provide further opportunities for the experiential
learning community to discover and examine the latest research and educational
advances, as well as discussing applications with developers and users.
The ICEL Steering Committee is once again proud to be the sponsor of this
exciting international event. Each ICEL experience is a unique opportunity
to exchange ideas on practice and research and the theme of the 2008 ICEL is
well chosen for these times when education, training and learning are facing
new challenges around the world.

You are invited to submit a proposal
Refereed Papers, non-refereed papers, workshops, Posters
An invitation is extended to all members of the Australian and international
experiential learning communities to submit proposals for the ICEL 2008 Conference.
We are using the START proposals submission process and arranging submissions
in relation to the four challenges. This allows sessions with common elements
to be grouped together, thus providing a relevant conference experience for
delegates. There will be an interactive exhibition program which will provide
an on-going visual display of presenters’ work.
Abstracts introducing all sessions will be included in the Program Handbook.
Full papers will be provided in an electronic format, and published as the
Conference Proceedings with ISBN registration.
We are especially interested in contributions that combine theory and practice,
and provide a rich mixture of concepts, ideas and practical applications. Students
are particularly encouraged to contribute as an opportunity to share their
emergent ideas and research goals with a large international and well-qualified
audience.

Presentation Formats
ICEL offers the opportunity for proposing workshops,
papers and contributions to an interactive poster exhibition. All workshops,
papers and posters must address one or more of the four conference themes and
your proposal statement will nominate this/these. All accepted
presentations will be able to submit a paper for inclusion in the conference
proceedings.
Paper Presentations
Presenters have about 20 minutes to introduce their key points, and are encouraged
to make the period as interactive as possible. Links between theory and
practice must be made clear. The total time allocated for each paper (including
moving in / out, introduction, presentation, Q&A) is 30 minutes.
Authors may choose whether or not their papers are refereed. The submission
dates for refereed and non-refereed papers appear in the table on this page.
Papers previously presented or published as well as marketing papers will
not be accepted.
Workshops
Workshops will be 45 or 90 Minutes long. More than 50% of workshop time must
involve participants in practical activities that extend well beyond the discussion.
We will consider proposals for three-hour workshops. These will need to describe
the proposed learning process in sufficient detail to support the request for
an extended session.
All workshop proposals will be subject to a full reviewing process and feedback
will be provided.
Posters
You may elect, or the Review Committee may select, presentations to be
given in a Poster format.
You may choose whether or not your poster is refereed. The submission
dates for refereed and non-refereed posters are the same as for papers.
A large public area will be set aside for display of posters, and/or electronic
displays. This area is central to most conference activities and some session
time will be dedicated to allowing participants to interact with presenters.
Symposium proposals

a Symposium on one of the conference themes please contact Kate Collier or
Elyssebeth Leigh for further information.
Conference Proceedings
Papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings if the presenter registers
for the conference by the required date.

Refereed Papers
ICEL 2008 includes a provision for Refereed Papers. Authors will be able to
submit papers for formal review in accordance with research council guidelines.
This facility is intended for academics and others to whom publishing credits
are important.
Members of the Paper Review Committee have generously agreed to undertake
this formal review.
Paper Submission
Authors whose Abstracts have been accepted, will be advised by email for the
URL for submitting their Papers.
