Diana Slade is Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). From 1998-2004 she was Associate Dean. Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Education at UTS and before that she was Head of the Department of Language and Literacy at UTS. Before joining UTS, in 1990, she was a lecturer on the MA program in Applied Linguistics in the linguistics Department, Sydney University for five years. She is also Chair of the UTS Teaching and Learning Committee as well as Deputy Chair of Academic Board.
Diana has over 20 years experience in researching, teaching and publishing in linguistics, applied linguistics and language education. Her main research areas are discourse analysis-in particular the analysis of spoken English, workplace communication and culture, TESOL syllabus design and methodology, curriculum development, and cross-cultural communication. Her recent area of research is on Emergency Communication, addressing the challenges in health care discourses. Her PhD related research was on the analysis of English casual conversation, and her books include Conversation: from Description to Pedagogy (with Scott Thornbury, 2006, Cambridge University Press); Analysing Casual Conversation (with Suzanne Eggins, 1997 Equinox, UK) and, Minority Languages and Dominant Culture: Issues of Equity, Education and Assessment, (with Kalantzis and Cope, Falmer Press 1990). She has published extensively in the area of discourse analysis of English, analysis of conversational English, TESOL curriculum and spoken and written communication in workplace contexts.
Diana is the co-convenor of the Discourse Analysis Scientific Commission of the International Association of Applied Linguistics. She has led many projects with industry, investigating language and communication in a range of workplaces (eg. with St George Hospital, TELSTRA, DEET, National Food Industry Training Council, NSW State Rail, BHP), undertaking extensive research and training.

Diana Slade is currently the primary CI on a three year ARC linkage grant (2007-2010) entitled Emergency Communication: Addressing the challenges in health care discourses and practices and in 2006 was the primary CI on the internal UTS Partnership Grant (2005) which resulted in the current linkage grant.
Diana Slade is primary CI on an 18th month UTS Partnership Grant with FPNSW called Communication in family planning consultations: Comparing the experiences of clients and medical practitioners.
Diana Slade is a member of the project team on a Carrick Institute Grant Developing interprofessional learning and practice capabilities within the Australian health workforce - a proposal for building capacity within the higher education sector.
Previous research projects:
Feb 2002-Feb 2005: ARC Industry Linkage grant, $120,000 from ARC (DETYA) and $120,000 from Syrinx Speech Systems and Adult Migrant Education Service over the three years; for project entitled Modelling the Melody of Human Speech. I am one of three Chief Investigators. This project aims to meet the needs of industry by developing a comprehensive and explicit description of information in Australian English. April 2000-April/2001: Industry Link Seeding Grant: Profiling Intonation in Australian English for Automated Speech Systems $15,000 from UTS; $9,000 from Syrinx Speech Systems. I was one of three Chief Investigators.
October 2000 - 2006: Changing Knowledges, Changing Identities: $15,000 from UTS and $15,000 from the Faculty of Education each year (with A. Pennycook, L. Yates, G. Riordan, J. Hammond, P. Gibbons, D. Hayes and R. Wickert
1998-2001: Language, Discourse and Policy Faculty designated research strength: $5,000 per year from UTS (with A. Pennycook, R. Wickert, A. Lee, J. Hammond and P. Gibbons).
1999 to present: 'Spoken Language Corpora' $30,000 from the Faculty of Education to fund the development of a spoken language data base (I initiated and directed the project, which is continuing. We have now collected approx. 1,000,000 words)
1998: TELSTRA Operator Assisted Services Literacy Project; $30,000. (equal team with H. Joyce)
1997: Assessment and Moderation Processes in Adult Literacy and Adult ESL in Tendered Labour Market Programs. $131,000 for the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education and Training (with W.Cope, N. Solomon, D. Plimer and T. McNamara)
1994-1995: Oral Communication in the Restructured Workplace: Teamwork, Consultation, Training and Job Performance: $139,861 funded by the National Food Industry Training Council, Department of Industry, Training and Regional Development (with N.Solomon, H. Joyce, H. Scheeres, C. Matthiessen and C. Nesbitt).
1994: Review of Cross-Cultural Training Provision: funding $20, 590 from the Office for Multicultural Affairs, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (equal team member with W.Cope, D. Brosnan, and A.Pauwells).
1993: Language Syllabus Framework for the Core Generic Modules Project: $9,320 for the National Food Industry Training Council (with N. Solomon).
1993: A Train-the-Trainers Program on the Role of Spoken and Written Language in the Workplace: $14,454 funded by the NSW State Rail Authority (with H.Joyce and H. Scheeres). I was responsible for the application for funding for this project, I managed and co-ordinated it as well as having a central role in the research and writing.
1993: Project to develop the National Framework of Adult English Language, Literacy and Numeracy Competence: $86,000 (with W.Cope, M. Kalantzis, N. Solomon, R.McCormack and A.Luke).
1993: Trialling and Evaluating Diversity Makes Good Business Training Program, $100,559 from the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (equal team member with W. Cope, M.Kalantis and N.Solomon).
