Associate Professor Rosemary Johnston is the Director of the Centre for Research and Education in the Arts at UTS. She was recently elected Vice-President of the Fédération Internationale des Langues et Littératures Modernes, which is related to UNESCO, and whose member associations include more than 40,000 scholars around the world. Her work has been translated into several languages, and she has been an invited guest speaker at a number of national and international conferences and symposia.

Professor Johnston is a literature and children’s literature specialist and has wide teaching experience. In 2000, she was H.W. Donner Guest Research Professor in the Faculty of Humanities of Abo Akademi University, Finland, where she was engaged in research in an interdisciplinary doctoral training program which included literature, language, semiotics, cultural studies, folklore, education and gender studies. The project was funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education.

In November 2002 she will be Guest Speaker at the Ninth Annual NCRCL/British IBBY (International Board of Books for Young People) Conference, Froebel College, University of Roehampton, Surrey, UK.

Teaching Areas:
Literature, Children's Literature, Drama, Teaching ESL, Literary Theory in undergraduate and graduate programs.
Supervision of research students in literature, children's literature, education and the arts.

Research Areas:
Research and scholarly interests include: Australian literature and children's literature, poetics and theory of children's literature, literature in the educational context, drama and literature, transdisciplinarity and the arts, significance of arts education.
